Hiring a tutor or educational support can be taxing in itself. There are so many choices but should we really take advantage of parents who are desperate to help
their children? Firstly, do not fall
for programs that offer guarantees.
Do not fall for programs that
say, "$15 per hour"--because in a couple of weeks, that 15 is up to 25 and going higher. This may be a gimmick.
Take a test, teach the skills and post test--thus stupendous gains!
Do not fall for the guarantee!!
Education just does not work that easily! Using an appropriate method for your child will work and will show gains. If your child does not show gains, then, he/she may need an updated or new evaluation or different modifications. There could be underlying issues. Please consult with the director of the program and make sure all these situations are addressed and referred out if necessary.
Instructors have to be mentored and educational services today should have to know education, methodologies, research and laws--local and federal. What if the student is at risk? How do you know how to help if a service "just connects" a tutor and sends to homes? Is going to the home always the best method? It certainly is convenient but centers have the best methodolgies to date and sometimes carting all
superb programs is not in the best interest of the child or teacher.
Is just working with homework the best way? Sometimes but we always need to look further if the student is failing or has a history of failing. For that reason, the directors need to know educational characteristics of students. The directors need to know how to guide the instructors and constantly ask questions.
All students want to learn even if they act as if they could care less or are "too cool" to care. We need to discover the underlying cause which could be a learning problem, anxiety, attention or depression.
Check and see how long a company has been in the area. Is it just a company from a national branch that just moved in the area to connect and send to homes or is the company just advertising in the area from another state? Use companies who have been available in the area for years. Find counselors, physcians, parents and other students who have used a company and checks instructors carefully.
